CV joints longevity?

Postby Smooth993 » Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:05 am

First I'd like to thank the boys at Rennsport for starting up this new Porsche tech forum and I wish it much success!

How many miles can one expect to get out a their CV joints?
The car is driven 50/50 city & freeway and never shifted hard?
Thanks!

Good question!

Miles & type of usage both play roles in how long the CV's & boots last, but generally speaking, they go at least 100K on street cars; less on track machines.

Now,..here the key: CV's last a VERY long time as long as the boots are intact and never leak grease. Once they crack and the lubricant get flung out, they do not last long at all. One needs to be diligent about inspecting the boots very closely at the bottom of the folds to detect any cracks. A good time to do this is during an oil change while you are waiting for things to drain out.

With the car on jackstands or a lift, put the transmission in neutral and rotate each wheel to inspect the folds of each boot.

Hope this helps,
Steve

100K? Wow I didn't think they would last that long. Is there any difference in wear rates between fronts and rears on C4s?

Does the selection of grease matter?

You are quite welcome,...:)

Yessir, grease matters. Just like people, all greases aren't alike and some work better than others. Cheap ones separate quickly and turn to clay, accelerating wear. Good greases remain miscible with their carriers and contain high-quality EP additives such as MoS.

I use Swepco #101 for most applications and Neo for highly stressed (and low) race cars. Really stressed CV's get Krytox, but thats dreadfully expensive and nasty stuff.

Hi Steve

I put my car in the air to check the CV joints and I found some play.
Further more, when under hard acceleration on take off in first, my cars rear end shifts a little to the left, no tire spin.
Also there is slack in my drive train. I'm assuming this is caused by the worn out CV joints?
My car has old Monroe dampers, but I have new front and rear control arm bushings and new motor mounts.
Grigsby will put new dampers and springs on next month.

The performance chip you sent me is working quite well! Upon take off the rear wheels spin when I hit 4k. Kind like my '69 LOL!...

And thanks for sending Grigsby the RS clutch kit for my car. It works beautifully!
