trickly charge 964?

Postby # 37 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 10:26 am

I recently purchased a 1991 964 C4
It is driven pretty much daily but i notice that if it sits [ or i leave the radar detector on]
there is a drain on the battery.
Figure this is because of all the electronics that are kept 'active' even when the car is off.
Are you guys running a trickle charger or just hitting the battery with a charge here and there?

I just try to drive the car.... but Steve has some recommendations for good battery tenders. We need him to weigh in here.

I use one, if I'm not going to drive the car for a week or more. Mine comes with additional wiring, which bolts to the battery terminals permanently, so that all you have to do is plug the charger in.

A battery should not go flat in a week if the car isn't driven, IF the battery isn't sulfated and at full charge to begin (12.8+ VDC, no load).

Naturally, all of cables, clamps and grounds MUST be in perfect condition and "bright, shiny & clean".

If everything is healthy, I'd connect your DVM in series on the positive battery cable to measure current draws. This will tell you if something is pulling more than 150 mils which can drain the battery in a week. If you find a significant current draw, pull each fuse in kind to isolate the circuit.

Got it.
The car is driven daily but occasionally sits for a day or two.
I noticed over 4-6 weeks the battery drains ever so slightly.
I'll check the draw and connections.
Thanks fellas.
