Ruf chips any good?

Postby Babalouie » Mon Feb 25, 2013 3:19 pm

Hi Steve

I know that Steve Wong does a great job and has a (deservedly) good reputation in our community, but it's just plain fun to say "Ruf DME" :D It would be even more fun to say "Kremer DME" but I don't believe that exists

They any good though? I recall that the first versions of the Ruf chips had a 7200rpm redline, and that was later revised to a more longevity-friendly 6900rpm.

Have you ever had a Ruf chipped car on your dyno?

Cheers
Kev

Hi Kev,

We have not had a Ruf chip here to test against Steve Wong's or ours so I cannot say.

Its prudent to mention that any custom software is usually programmed for the fuel octane availability and Europe's 98 RON is quite different from our 93-94 R+M/2 gasolines. I would not run such a thing unless I checked the AFR's & timing very closely with some dyno testing at all throttle openings to ensure there is no chance of engine damage.

Fair comment, thanks :)

I'm in Australia though, so 98RON is what we got, too. But I agree, a dyno run with the new chip in place would be a good idea, just to verify. That said, it would probably be a good idea to dyno check if I went down the Steve Wong path, too.

Steve's chips are mainly tuned with CA 91 so I know it will be safe for 98 RON fuels, .:)

Ah, good point :)

I just had an idea...I have a spare DME, and do you think I can just install the aftermarket chip in the spare one, and just swap them over between dyno runs? Or does a DME need to "learn" with a period of regular driving before it can be dynoed?

No worries,...you can swap them without a problem. :)
