Oil Pump Recommendation, 2.7

Postby jameshtaylor » Sat Aug 17, 2013 11:01 am

We recently pulled my 2.7 motor apart, having observed larger than normal aluminum flakes in the filter, reduced oil pressure and increased lead content in the oil over a period of months. Motor had 30k miles including 100 track hours. Inspection showed everything perfect except rods and mains at front (clutch end) of case which were worn and require redo. When built, case was blueprinted, line bored and shuffle pinned. Compression is modest at 9.5. The oil bypass modification was done but the pump was stock 1975 3 rib.
Seems likely I should have installed the 4 rib SC/Carrera pump with the bypass modification, but would it be smart now to go beyond that to the 964 (which I think is the next step up except for the 930.)?
I also understand oil pumps can be "ported and polished" to provide increased thru-put. Good idea?

Many thanks Steve. We are measuring everything see if something interesting turns up, so far, nothing. I think I'll look for a 964 pump anyway or, if too dear, just settle for a suitable 4 rib. I'll post again if we turn up anything useful when measuring is completed. Jim

Previously owned 964 oil pumps look scarcer than hen's teeth. Anyone have an SC four-rib in good shape he's willing to part with?
