According to Car & Driver, they don't add anything...

Its really difficult to make wide, far-reaching generalizations about things like that, especially without the experience & credibility to match.

While I cannot speak about many cars, Some of the ones I'd driven really benefited from a properly designed strut brace and I have no reservations about recommending them.

For the record, the 996-997-991 cars do not need any such devices since those chassis' are plenty stiff. :)

Go auto-x a Mk1 Rabbit or Scirocco without stress bars up front (upper and lower) and watch the paint flake off the strut towers from all the flex. Personal experience. Some cars not only can benefit, some NEED them.

Some say that with the proper strut tower braces a Yugo corners like a Ferrari...
