Timing Chain Ramp Replacement 1979 911 SC

Postby csressler » Wed May 08, 2013 10:23 am

I recently changed the oil on my 911 SC and got the "hot flash" when I noticed plastic bits in the oil. The bits appear to be parts the timing chain ramps. The engine has 144K, and has not had a tensioner upgrade. Since we have to pass DEQ here in Oregon, I am considering a future VRam conversion as an upgrade while maintaining environmental compliance; hence, the rub. Should I forego a tensioner upgrade and replace the ramps and install tensioner locks until I can afford the VRam upgrade? Or, bite the bullet, and perform a tensioner upgrade and eat the additional cost when I convert to the VRam. Realistically, I'm about 2 years away from having the car ready for the conversion.

For now, the car sits in my garage awaiting it's fate.

No DEQ tests down here in Eugene, so I may not know what I'm talking about. But I thought more than 25 years old was exempt?

Unfortunately, the Portland area DEQ has established testing for all 1975 and newer vehicles. We don't have a sliding window like Medford. Makes you wonder if it's really about the environment. ;)

Hi Sean,

Long time, no see,...:D

No delay here,....you need to replace all the ramps right now and do the Carrera tensioner upgrade. Those plastic bits are fair warning about a potential catastrophe,.......

You'll get some good cost recovery when you sell the 3.0 for the V-Ram.

Arne,

Unlike Washington, there are no DEQ rolling exemptions. Each & every '75 & later car must get smog checked and meet compliance specifications.

Thanks for the advice Steve. I suspected I would go the tensioner route. I just needed a bit of reassurance. A tensioner upgrade it is.....

Perhaps I'll see you this Thursday?

Small world regarding Vram. This year I plan on shipping my 96 low miles :D Vram to Steve for an RS upgrade
Yesterday I picked up two "watermelon " ( 3 layer heavy duty ) container from my local Costco to make one super strong shipping container for the LTL move.
Gathering parts for this future project.
