Removing Air Pump from 1979 SC

Postby csressler » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:33 am

The air pump on my '79 SC finally gave up the ghost. It began making a ticking noise and now with the belt disconnected I can feel it bind when turning it by hand.

Rather than replacing it, I plan to remove it. A couple of questions regarding it's removal:

1) Since I don't have to pass a visual for Oregon DEQ (smog) inspection, is it realistic to believe the car can pass Oregon emissions without the air pump?
2) If I remove the pump, but leave the check valve in place, will that be enough to seal off the air injectors (until I can remove the air injection completely)?

Are there any other considerations I should take into account before removing the pump?

Hi Sean,

Your car should pass DEQ without the pump as long as its in good health,..:)

You can leave the CV in place, but I'd plug the injector holes just as soon as its feasible.
