Help me tune my 2.2 race motor

Postby bassam » Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:31 pm

Here's what I have:
2.2L
pistons 85mm, 10.5/1 compression, JE pistons, single plug
crank 66mm stoke
heads 38 intakes and 36 exhaust
valves 46 mm intake and 40mm exhaust
webcam Grind:120/104, 284 degrees intake and 270 exhaust
46 PMO carburetors, 1.5" headers with 2 in 2 out race Magnaflow

My question is what is a good starting point on timing for that motor? I tried to educate myself about timing and I got the impression that the higher the compression ratio the less timing advance the engine needs, is that true? I got a timing light and I checked the setup as it is now, I got around 8 if I remember correctly at idle and 36 at 5000 rpm, is this too advanced? Knowing that the car runs on 100 octane. Another method to set the advance timing I saw online is to keep advancing the timing on a dyno till the car starts loosing power and then back off couple of degrees, will this approach work? Thanks.

Bassam,

36 degrees total is a bunch of timing for a 10.5:1 motor, but if you use 110 octane leaded fuel, you will be just fine and it will make good power!

will 32 degrees (as listed on PMO website) be more of a conservative number to use with 100 octane? to be on the safe side? Thank you Steve.
